Lice Facts

  • "Lice" is plural for "Louse" much like "Mice" is plural for "Mouse".

  • Lice have six leg with hook like claws that enable them to climb up and down the hair shaft rather quickly.

  • Head lice cannot jump or fly!

  • It takes head to head contact or by the sharing of personal objects such as hair ties, scarves, and hats to get head lice.

  • You cannot drown lice. Washing your hair will not kill the lice. Lice can shut their bodies down for up to two hours!

  • They live very close to the scalp and occasionally wander down the hair shaft.

  • They only live on human beings: you can't catch them from animals.

  • "Nits" are the eggs that lice lay.

  • "Nits" are glued to the hair shaft.

  • "Nits" can't be washed off. They must be manually removed.
